A Budding Romance

April, I long for the arrival of your
 ethereal splendour, daylight that dazzles,
 elemental harmony and enchanting nights.

 I confess:
in the springtime of my being,
my romance with October,
(which proved to be a fling,
and should have been
 over decades ago),
 blinded me from seeing
how romantically appealing
you can truly be.

So, thank you, sweet April,
for the meadows of soft petals
that cushion my sore feet,
  for the sparkly rays of
sunshine that adorn my shoulders,
for the dewy, dainty raindrops
 that trickle down my lashes
 and for the fragrant blossoms
that prompt my heart to skip a beat.

Now, in the autumn of my days,
the praise of leafy luxury
 has morphed into malaise, since,
 what follows fallen foliage
- winter's barren browns
and callous whites -
 could never ignite the passion
 found in springtime's floral brights.

  1. Haha! I laughed aloud at the confession. I had never thought to compare them as lovers, and confess I would choose spring, too. Though Autumn is also enchanting.

  2. Autumn has always been my favorite ... but I have always wished it was followed immediately with Spring!

  4. Ah, while my heart lifts in joy at April's arrival, sunshine and birdsong, I remain true to autumn and her lush colours. So lovely to see you, Poppy!

  5. I understand just what you've written so beautifully here, Poppy. While I will remain true to the months that end with ...ber, I am falling in love with spring too.

Who knows, maybe some day I'll even fall in love with July and August? Nah, I don't think so.

  7. What lovely writing. The pictures are beautiful too. I think April and Autumn are partners somehow. They both announce beginnings and endings.

  9. Personally I am fond of autumn (literally and metaphorically) but Spring does have its enchantments too, which you have described so enticingly here.

  12. A lovely vision of Springtime in your poem, Poppy. The countryside in Crete in April is truly dazzling and your words and photos bring back memories of my homeland to me.

  13. I am enjoying reading through some of your posts. I am taking joy in your command of language. Words have meanings; wonderful, full meanings that ignite the imagination. So often, in today's world, we opt for the lowest common vocabulary to express our thoughts. Intermingle a saturated word with respendent images and you find me lingering longer than I probably should...
