Ongoing

Of all my time
on Mother Earth,
(some 50 + years
since my own birth),
it's the present
that I think,
is mostly worth
discussing.

For, the past
(nowadays),
always seems
 so sweet.
Its bitterness,
with work,
sought retreat,
and in hindsight,
had no purpose.

 You see,
forgiveness and pride,
 two nemeses that,
fought each other ruthlessly,
in a never-ending odyssey,
one day, quite shockingly,
surrendered simultaneously
as if they were outnumbered.

But,
forgiveness has a memory
and pride, a tendency toward enmity,
and thus, that idyllic victory,
was unsurprisingly, short-lived.

Today,
the two forces are not
as fueled, since time has
invaded their dwindling duel,
but underneath the battleground,
the earth still burns and trembles.

  1. This is such a lovely poem... so wise of you to compare the past & the present. Its true, one always finds the past to be much better than the present state... loved the lines

Agreed with the truth of the matter that pride never lets us ask for forgiveness of others and we are bound by it. It is definitely short-lived.

  2. So much to breathe in Poppy. I love your ending with a duel - that seems what our world is doing now fighting for (and with) what they know little about.
Hope the sun warms Crete tomorrow

  3. Wow. You have expressed so much wisdom here Poppy. The present moment is definitely what matters yet though time heals, we never forget deep wounds. This is a great poem!

  4. I struggle so with forgiveness and faith that I relish this wisdom to stay in the present. The duel between forgiveness and pride has too much power to detract from the now, too much potential of keeping us in the past. Like children, their craziness fades a little when they don't get all the attention. I love how you bring forth this nugget throiugh a melodrama complete with suspense, victories and losses. Brilliant. Thank you.

  5. Much wisdom. I agree that the present is all we have, so don't waste it.

  8. I like it for there is not a mention of a future but just a retrospective insight. Well worded.

  12. ' the present
    that I think,
    is mostly worth
discussing.' ~ lovely line. Also, I like the perspective of forgiveness and proudness....and that, even today 'the earth still burns and trembles.' perhaps all depends on Love.... ~ Unique form and approach. x

  14. Poppy,

If only enlightenment could be universal at a unique time..Then perhaps some of the friction and the enmity could have been halted, both in a world context and within our own worlds...Instead, instability seems to be in control...
